I’ve been seeing both Tess & Georgia for the last 12+ months and they’ve been nothing short of miracle workers! Not only is the appointment process seamless and always easy - the quality of service and care delivered is consistently at such a high level, and you’re made to feel comfortable straight away, both from their expertise and calm approach. They’ve helped me with back, arm and wrist pain management from being in a long term desk role, to now prenatal Physio and care around keeping my body strong and ready for what’s ahead. Thank you ladies, I appreciate all the work you continue to do and this is such a valuable clinic to have in our community!

I’d never really used a physio consistently before, but it’s now a key part of my routine to maintain my body and correct the bad habits and posture that life inevitably creates. Georgia and Tessa have been fantastic, highly knowledgeable, genuinely caring, and clearly passionate about what they do. They’re a real staple in the community and it’s easy to see why they’re so well known, respected, and loved. Highly recommend.

Physio Help After Shoulder Surgery

Can Physio Help After Shoulder Surgery?

Shoulder surgery can be a critical step towards relieving pain and restoring movement, but the journey doesn’t end in the operating room. Post-operative physiotherapy plays a vital role in recovery, as it helps patients regain mobility, reduce pain and restore function. So, can physio help after shoulder surgery?

The answer is a resounding yes. Targeted physiotherapy after surgery improves shoulder range of motion, rebuilds strength and reduces the risk of complications, helping you get back to daily activities faster.

In this blog, we discuss the role of physiotherapy after shoulder surgery, the types of rehab exercises involved and when to seek help to support long-term healing.

Why Physiotherapy Is Important After Shoulder Surgery

While surgery addresses the structural issue, physiotherapy addresses the recovery. Shoulder joints are highly mobile and complex, which makes rehab essential to avoid long-term stiffness, pain or weakness.

Here’s how physiotherapy supports recovery:

  • Restores range of motion: After surgery, the shoulder can become stiff. Gentle passive movements early in the recovery process can help prevent long-term restriction.
  • Rebuilds strength: As healing progresses, targeted strengthening exercises help restore muscle balance and shoulder stability.
  • Reduces pain and inflammation: Manual therapy, dry needling and guided movement can alleviate discomfort.
  • Prevents complications: Physiotherapy helps avoid frozen shoulder, scar tissue build-up and re-injury.

Common Types of Shoulder Surgeries That Require Physio

Not all shoulder surgeries are the same and the rehab approach differs depending on the type of procedure performed. Common surgeries include:

  • Rotator cuff repair
  • Shoulder stabilisation (for dislocations)
  • Labral repair (SLAP tear)
  • Shoulder replacement (arthroplasty)
  • Acromioplasty (subacromial decompression)

Each of these procedures has its own healing timelines and precautions. Your physiotherapist will work closely with your surgeon’s post-op guidelines to tailor your rehab plan.

What to Expect During Shoulder Physio Recovery

Post-operative physiotherapy generally progresses through several phases:

1. Immobilisation Phase (0–4 weeks)

Your arm may be in a sling. The focus here is on:

  • Pain management
  • Gentle passive movement
  • Protecting the surgical site

2. Early Mobilisation (4–8 weeks)

Once cleared by your surgeon, you’ll start with:

  • Assisted range-of-motion exercises
  • Postural awareness
  • Light pendulum and stretching exercises

3. Strengthening Phase (8–12 weeks)

As tissues heal, strengthening becomes the priority:

  • Isometric shoulder and scapular muscle work
  • Resistance band exercises
  • Core stability

4. Advanced Rehab (12+ weeks)

  • Functional movements
  • Sport-specific or work-related training
  • Return-to-activity planning

When to Start Physio After Shoulder Surgery

The timing of your first physio session depends on the type of surgery and your surgeon’s recommendations. In many cases, physiotherapy begins within the first week post-surgery to prevent stiffness. Delaying physio may prolong your recovery or lead to complications, such as frozen shoulders.

At FlexiFit Physiotherapy, we work directly with your surgeon’s post-op plan to ensure you’re progressing safely and effectively.

Signs You May Need More Focused Rehab

Even if you’re already doing basic movement at home, you might benefit from professional physiotherapy if you notice:

  • Persistent pain beyond the expected timeline
  • Difficulty lifting your arm above shoulder height
  • Weakness during daily tasks (e.g. dressing, lifting objects)
  • Sleep disruption from shoulder discomfort
  • Limited progress with home exercises

Benefits of Working with a Physiotherapist

Trying to navigate shoulder recovery on your own can lead to setbacks. A professional physio provides:

  • Tailored rehab programs
  • Manual therapy and dry needling for pain relief
  • Posture correction to improve movement
  • Monitoring of progress to ensure optimal healing
  • Motivation and accountability to keep you on track

How Long Does It Take to Recover Fully?

Everyone heals differently, but here are some general timelines:

  • Minor shoulder procedures: 6–8 weeks
  • Rotator cuff repair: 3–6 months
  • Shoulder replacement: 4–8 months
  • Athletic return-to-play: 6+ months

Staying consistent with physiotherapy and following advice can significantly improve your recovery speed and quality.
