Have been seeing Georgia from flexifit for around one year after being referred by my partner. Came in with bad neck pain on my right side after 1-2 years of remedial massages trying to fix but Georgia quickly diagnosed an issue with my shoulder causing the strain/pain . I am now pain free in my neck and mobility has improved drastically. I have also recently torn my left meniscus and Georgia has gone above and beyond getting me back to normal after surgery . Couldn’t recommend enough phenomenal service .

Georgia is a legend. I’ve had over a decade of various practitioners after a neck injury in childhood, unfortunately made worse by a chiropractic adjustment in 2021. The nerve pain that followed set up a vicious cycle of progressive weakening, regular flares, vertigo & despair..until I found Georgia. Together with her guidance, amazing hands on care & reformer Pilates I am finally managing my pain and now have the luxury of working towards gaining in strength and fitness. Thank you Georgia! ❤️🙏

How Long Is A Dry Needling Session?

Dry needling offers relief and recovery from muscular pain. If you’re considering this treatment, one of the first questions you might have is: How long is the dry needling session?

The good news is that most treatments are relatively quick. They typically last around 30 minutes, depending on your needs and the specific treatment areas.

In this article, we’ll explore the typical session length, what factors can influence it and why this time frame is ideal for effective relief. Read on to learn how dry needling fits seamlessly into your schedule while helping to ease your discomfort.

How Long Is A Dry Needling Session? A Quick Answer

A typical dry needling session usually lasts about 30 minutes. However, the exact duration can vary based on several factors, including the severity of your condition, the number of areas being treated and your body’s response to the therapy. Your practitioner will tailor the session length to optimise your treatment outcomes, aiming to provide effective relief in a time-efficient manner. This approach ensures that each session not only targets your immediate pain points but also accommodates your overall health and wellness goals.

Factors Affecting the Duration of a Dry Needling Session

Every dry needling session is unique and tailored to meet the specific needs of the patient. The factors that determine the length of each session include:

Patient’s Condition and Goals

The specific health issues and treatment objectives of a patient play a critical role in determining the session’s length. Sessions may be longer if the condition is chronic or severe. For instance, a patient suffering from long-term back pain may require more extensive treatment compared to someone with a recent, mild muscular injury.

The goals set during the initial assessment will also guide the session’s duration. A patient aiming for quick pain relief might need shorter, more frequent sessions, while those who are seeking long-term mobility improvement might benefit from longer, comprehensive sessions tailored to facilitate gradual muscle recovery.

Area Being Treated

Treating larger or multiple areas may take more time to ensure all muscles are properly addressed. For instance, working on the entire back or both legs involves more muscle groups and trigger points, which naturally extends the session. On the other hand, focusing on a single area, like the shoulder or calf, tends to be much quicker. The size and complexity of the treatment area play a big role in how the practitioner plans the session, making sure each region gets the attention it needs for effective relief.

Practitioner’s Technique

The technique your practitioner uses can also affect how long your session lasts. Some specialists prefer quick, intensive methods that target trigger points fast, which might mean shorter sessions but more frequent visits. Others take a slower, more gentle approach, working through muscle layers at a steady pace. This could make a session a bit longer but might reduce the number of sessions overall. Both styles have their benefits, and the right one for you depends on your specific needs and comfort level.

Patient’s Response to Treatment

Everyone responds to dry needling differently. Some people might feel quick relief in shorter sessions, while others may need longer ones for the same results. Factors like muscle sensitivity, pain tolerance and how your body reacts to the needling all play a role in how fast you experience relief. Some patients feel noticeable improvement right away, while for others, the changes happen more gradually. Because of this, practitioners often adjust session lengths and treatment plans to match each person’s recovery pace and needs.

Frequency of Sessions

The timing between sessions can influence their length. Early sessions are often longer to thoroughly assess and begin treatment, while future sessions are adjusted based on how the patient is responding.

For instance, the initial session may take more time to address all areas of concern. As treatment progresses and the practitioner gains a clearer picture of the patient’s response, sessions might become shorter if there’s quick improvement or shift focus to areas needing more attention. This personalised approach ensures each session is as effective as possible, aligning with the patient’s recovery and treatment goals.

What Happens During a Dry Needling Session

Understanding what happens during a dry needling session can help set realistic expectations and ease any apprehensions. When having a dry needling session, the following processes are to be expected:

Consultation and Assessment

Every session starts with a consultation. This allows the practitioner to review the patient’s medical history and current condition. This initial assessment is key to crafting a safe and personalised treatment plan that addresses specific health needs.

Preparation of Treatment Area

Before starting, the practitioner cleans the target area and ensures the patient is comfortably positioned to allow easy access to the affected muscles. This step is key for safe, effective needle insertion.

Needle Insertion

The core of the treatment involves inserting fine needles into specific muscle trigger points. The practitioner will adjust the needles to stimulate the muscle and look for a twitch response, a sign that the trigger point has been properly targeted.

Monitoring and Adjustment

Throughout the session, the practitioner monitors the patient’s response and makes adjustments as needed. This could mean repositioning the needles or changing the intensity, all based on the patient’s comfort and feedback.

Post-Treatment Care

After the needles are removed, the practitioner provides post-treatment advice, like recommended stretches or activities. These tips help enhance the benefits of the session and support ongoing muscle recovery.

How to Prepare for a Dry Needling Session?

Preparing for a dry needling session can enhance its effectiveness and increase comfort during the treatment. Proper preparation helps ensure that the session runs smoothly and maximises the therapeutic benefits. Here are some tips that will help you to get ready for your dry needling session:

Determining Suitability for Treatment

Before considering dry needling, consult with a healthcare professional to determine if it’s suitable for your condition. Individuals with certain medical conditions, such as those prone to bleeding disorders or with a fear of needles, may need to consider other therapies.

Appropriate Clothing

Wear loose, comfortable clothing to your session. This allows the practitioner easy access to the areas that need treatment without restriction. Clothes that easily stretch or provide access, like shorts or a tank top, are ideal depending on the area being targeted.

Pre-Session Relaxation

Engage in calming activities before your session to help relax your muscles and mind. Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation or listening to soothing music can reduce tension and enhance the effectiveness of the treatment.

Hydration

Ensure you are well-hydrated before the session. Drinking plenty of water helps keep the muscles pliable and responsive to treatment, which can ease the insertion of needles and reduce any potential discomfort.

Light Meals

Eat a light meal a few hours before the session to prevent any discomfort. Having food in your stomach can help you avoid feeling lightheaded during the treatment but avoid a heavy meal that could cause discomfort while lying down.

Takeaway

A dry needling session usually lasts around 30 minutes, giving the practitioner enough time to target trigger points and promote pain relief and improved mobility. This duration is designed to maximise the benefits of treatment while keeping the session manageable, allowing you to quickly return to your day with minimal interruption. Knowing this, you can confidently consider dry needling as part of your health routine, understanding how it fits into your schedule and supports your overall wellness goals.
