I’ve been seeing both Tess & Georgia for the last 12+ months and they’ve been nothing short of miracle workers! Not only is the appointment process seamless and always easy - the quality of service and care delivered is consistently at such a high level, and you’re made to feel comfortable straight away, both from their expertise and calm approach. They’ve helped me with back, arm and wrist pain management from being in a long term desk role, to now prenatal Physio and care around keeping my body strong and ready for what’s ahead. Thank you ladies, I appreciate all the work you continue to do and this is such a valuable clinic to have in our community!

I’d never really used a physio consistently before, but it’s now a key part of my routine to maintain my body and correct the bad habits and posture that life inevitably creates. Georgia and Tessa have been fantastic, highly knowledgeable, genuinely caring, and clearly passionate about what they do. They’re a real staple in the community and it’s easy to see why they’re so well known, respected, and loved. Highly recommend.

How Long Should a Physio Session Last?

How Long Should a Physio Session Last?

If you’re booking your first physiotherapy appointment or planning ongoing care, it’s natural to wonder: how long should a physio session last? Whether you’re recovering from an injury, dealing with chronic pain or aiming to improve mobility, understanding how session times work can help you prepare for treatment and get the most out of every visit.

In this article, we’ll break down typical physiotherapy session durations, what affects the length of your session and what to expect before, during and after your visit.

Quick Overview: How Long Should a Physio Session Last?

Physiotherapy sessions usually last between 30 and 60 minutes. Your first session is typically longer, often 45 to 60 minutes, as it includes a detailed assessment. Follow-up treatments are often 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the complexity of your condition and the type of therapy provided.

What Determines the Length of a Physio Session?

The length of a physiotherapy session isn’t one-size-fits-all. Several factors can influence how long you spend with your physio.

1. Initial vs Follow-Up Appointments

The type of appointment you book can influence how long your session lasts.

  • Initial consultation: Generally 45–60 minutes, as it includes a full health history, physical assessment, diagnosis and your first round of treatment.
  • Follow-up sessions: Typically 30–45 minutes, focused on treatment, progress checks and progression of your rehab plan.

2. Complexity of Your Condition

Longer sessions may be needed if you’re dealing with:

  • Multiple injuries
  • Post-surgical rehab
  • Chronic pain conditions
  • Neurological or mobility impairments

Milder or more localised concerns, like a mild sprain, can usually be treated in shorter sessions.

3. Type of Treatment Involved

Different physiotherapy techniques naturally require different timeframes.

  • Manual therapy or massage may take longer, particularly when treating larger areas or multiple regions.
  • Exercise-based rehabilitation and movement retraining often need more guided time, especially in sports rehab or return-to-play programs, which commonly run 45–60 minutes.
  • Treatments like dry needling or taping are usually shorter, often 15–30 minutes, and are frequently
  • combined with other therapies during a standard session.

4. Your Progress and Goals

Session length can change over time. As your symptoms improve, some appointments may become shorter, while others may focus on progressing your home exercise program, refining movement patterns or supporting injury prevention as you return to full activity.

What Happens During a Physio Session?

Here’s what you can expect during a typical visit to FlexiFit Physiotherapy:

Initial Appointment:

  • Comprehensive assessment
  • Medical history review
  • Movement and posture analysis
  • Diagnosis explanation
  • First round of treatment (manual therapy, needling, taping, etc.)
  • Education and home exercise prescription

Follow-Up Sessions:

  • Progress review
  • Targeted treatment for affected areas
  • Hands-on therapy and exercise progression
  • Reassessment of movement, pain and strength
  • Adjustments to your program as needed

Each session is tailored to your stage of recovery and functional goals.

How to Make the Most of Your Physio Session

To get the best results from each session:

  • Arrive early so your full session can be used productively
  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows easy movement
  • Do your home exercises consistently so sessions can focus on progress
  • Communicate openly about pain, challenges or questions

Our team values your time, and we want to ensure every minute contributes to your recovery.

Can You Request a Longer Session?

Absolutely. If you feel you need more time, whether for massage, post-op rehab or complex treatment, we can schedule longer appointments. Just let our team know your preference when booking.

Final Thoughts

So, how long should a physio session last? It depends on your individual situation, but most sessions fall between 30 and 60 minutes. Your first appointment is typically longer to allow for a thorough assessment and treatment planning. After that, session times may vary based on your progress, treatment type and personal goals.

At FlexiFit Physiotherapy, we prioritise results, not the clock. Our sessions are designed to give you the care, attention and hands-on support you need to move well and feel better.
