I’ve been seeing both Tess & Georgia for the last 12+ months and they’ve been nothing short of miracle workers! Not only is the appointment process seamless and always easy - the quality of service and care delivered is consistently at such a high level, and you’re made to feel comfortable straight away, both from their expertise and calm approach. They’ve helped me with back, arm and wrist pain management from being in a long term desk role, to now prenatal Physio and care around keeping my body strong and ready for what’s ahead. Thank you ladies, I appreciate all the work you continue to do and this is such a valuable clinic to have in our community!

I’d never really used a physio consistently before, but it’s now a key part of my routine to maintain my body and correct the bad habits and posture that life inevitably creates. Georgia and Tessa have been fantastic, highly knowledgeable, genuinely caring, and clearly passionate about what they do. They’re a real staple in the community and it’s easy to see why they’re so well known, respected, and loved. Highly recommend.

Have been seeing Georgia from flexifit for around one year after being referred by my partner. Came in with bad neck pain on my right side after 1-2 years of remedial massages trying to fix but Georgia quickly diagnosed an issue with my shoulder causing the strain/pain . I am now pain free in my neck and mobility has improved drastically. I have also recently torn my left meniscus and Georgia has gone above and beyond getting me back to normal after surgery . Couldn’t recommend enough phenomenal service .

Georgia is a legend. I’ve had over a decade of various practitioners after a neck injury in childhood, unfortunately made worse by a chiropractic adjustment in 2021. The nerve pain that followed set up a vicious cycle of progressive weakening, regular flares, vertigo & despair..until I found Georgia. Together with her guidance, amazing hands on care & reformer Pilates I am finally managing my pain and now have the luxury of working towards gaining in strength and fitness. Thank you Georgia! ❤️🙏

What Is Sports Physiotherapy?

Whether you’re a professional athlete or a weekend warrior, staying active means putting your body to the test. But when injury strikes or performance dips, it’s time to ask: what is sports physiotherapy and how can it help you?

Sports physiotherapy is a specialised branch of physiotherapy that focuses on treating and preventing injuries related to physical activity. It combines hands-on techniques, exercise programs and performance strategies to help athletes recover faster, move better and minimise the risk of future injuries.

In this guide, we’ll explore what sports physiotherapy is, how it works and why it’s a game-changer for anyone who wants to stay at the top of their game.

Quick Overview: What Is Sports Physiotherapy?

Sports physiotherapy is dedicated to the care of athletes and active individuals. It helps manage sports injuries, improve mobility and performance and prevent re-injury. By assessing movement patterns, applying targeted treatment and creating personalised rehab plans, sports physiotherapists help you recover faster and perform better—no matter your sport or skill level.

Who Needs Sports Physiotherapy?

You don’t need to be a professional athlete to benefit from sports physiotherapy. This specialised care is ideal for:

  • Athletes in training or competition
  • Active individuals recovering from injury
  • Fitness enthusiasts managing muscle imbalances
  • Anyone wanting to prevent sports-related injuries

If you’re experiencing pain, stiffness or recurring injuries from physical activity, sports physiotherapy can provide the targeted care you need to bounce back stronger.

Common Sports Injuries Physiotherapy Can Help With

Sports physiotherapy addresses a wide range of acute and chronic injuries, including:

  • Sprained ankles
  • Tennis or golfer’s elbow
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Runner’s knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome)
  • ACL and ligament tears
  • Hamstring strains
  • Shin splints
  • Achilles tendinopathy

Whether it’s an overuse injury or a sudden trauma during sport, physiotherapists use evidence-based techniques to speed up healing and reduce downtime.

Key Benefits of Sports Physiotherapy

Sports physiotherapy offers several advantages. Here’s how it can help you:

1. Accelerates Recovery

Injury doesn’t have to mean months on the bench. Sports physiotherapy promotes faster healing through manual therapy, movement correction and tailored rehabilitation plans.

2. Prevents Future Injuries

By analysing how you move, sports physiotherapists identify weaknesses or imbalances that may lead to injury. Prevention strategies are then implemented to keep your body resilient.

3. Enhances Performance

It’s not just about recovery. Sports physiotherapy helps optimise biomechanics, flexibility, endurance and strength to improve your performance in your chosen sport.

4. Supports Safe Return to Sport

Returning too soon can cause re-injury. A physiotherapist will guide your return through staged rehab, sport-specific drills and conditioning.

5. Customised Treatment Plans

Every athlete is different. That’s why treatment plans are tailored to your specific sport, injury, fitness level and recovery timeline.

Techniques Used in Sports Physiotherapy

At FlexiFit Physiotherapy, we offer a wide range of treatment methods, including:

  • Manual therapy – to restore joint and soft tissue mobility
  • Exercise prescription – for strength, stability and functional movement
  • Dry needling – to release tight muscle trigger points
  • Taping and bracing – to support injured areas during activity
  • Biomechanical assessments – to optimise movement and prevent injury
  • Neuromuscular re-education – to improve coordination and control

All treatment plans are goal-oriented and evolve as you progress.

Sports-Specific Rehabilitation

Different sports come with different movement demands and risks. Our team tailors rehab to match the physical needs of your sport:

  • Runners: Foot strike mechanics, hip strength, core stability
  • Swimmers: Shoulder mobility, scapular control
  • Cyclists: Posture correction, spinal flexibility
  • Footballers: Agility, ankle and knee stability
  • Tennis players: Rotational strength, grip and elbow control

This approach ensures not just recovery, but also a return to peak performance.

What to Expect in a Sports Physiotherapy Session

Here’s what a typical session at FlexiFit Physiotherapy looks like:

  • Initial Assessment: We begin with a detailed assessment of your injury, movement patterns, sport-specific demands and goals.
  • Hands-On Treatment: Includes manual therapy, soft tissue work or dry needling to relieve pain and improve function.
  • Rehab Exercises: Tailored exercise programs are introduced to strengthen weak areas and support recovery.
  • Ongoing Progression: As you improve, exercises and techniques are modified to challenge you and prepare you for full return to sport.
  • Education & Prevention: We teach you how to avoid future injuries through posture tips, warm-up strategies and biomechanical advice.

When to See a Sports Physiotherapist

It’s best to see a sports physiotherapist when:

  • You have an acute or chronic injury from sport
  • Pain affects your ability to train or perform
  • You’re recovering from surgery or trauma
  • You want to boost performance or prevent injury

Early intervention leads to better outcomes, so don’t wait until the pain worsens.
