Have been seeing Georgia from flexifit for around one year after being referred by my partner. Came in with bad neck pain on my right side after 1-2 years of remedial massages trying to fix but Georgia quickly diagnosed an issue with my shoulder causing the strain/pain . I am now pain free in my neck and mobility has improved drastically. I have also recently torn my left meniscus and Georgia has gone above and beyond getting me back to normal after surgery . Couldn’t recommend enough phenomenal service .

Georgia is a legend. I’ve had over a decade of various practitioners after a neck injury in childhood, unfortunately made worse by a chiropractic adjustment in 2021. The nerve pain that followed set up a vicious cycle of progressive weakening, regular flares, vertigo & despair..until I found Georgia. Together with her guidance, amazing hands on care & reformer Pilates I am finally managing my pain and now have the luxury of working towards gaining in strength and fitness. Thank you Georgia! ❤️🙏

Can Dry Needling Help With Plantar Fasciitis?

Living with plantar fasciitis can make every step a painful challenge. This common condition causes stabbing pain in the heel, especially after periods of rest or prolonged activity. If you’re looking for effective treatment, you may wonder: Can dry needling help plantar fasciitis?

The answer is yes. Dry needling targets trigger points in the muscles and fascia to relieve tension, reduce pain and promote healing. By addressing the underlying causes of plantar fasciitis, this technique offers a pathway to lasting relief.

In this article, we’ll explain how dry needling works, its benefits for plantar fasciitis and when to seek professional care. Read on to learn if this innovative therapy is right for you.

Can Dry Needling Help With Plantar Fasciitis? A Quick Overview

Yes, dry needling can effectively relieve plantar fasciitis pain. By targeting muscle knots and tension in the fascia, this therapy improves circulation, reduces inflammation and supports faster recovery. Combined with professional care, it’s a powerful tool for restoring foot function and comfort.

What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is a condition caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia—a thick band of tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot and connects your heel to your toes. This inflammation leads to pain, particularly in the heel area, which can worsen with activity or after periods of inactivity. Its common causes include:

  • Overuse: High-impact activities or prolonged standing can strain the fascia.
  • Foot Mechanics: Flat feet, high arches or improper footwear may contribute.
  • Tight Muscles: Stiff calf muscles can place additional stress on the plantar fascia.

How Does Dry Needling Work for Plantar Fasciitis?

Dry needling is a minimally invasive technique that uses thin needles to target trigger points in the muscles and fascia. Here’s how it helps:

Releases Trigger Points

Trigger points, or muscle knots, often contribute to plantar fasciitis pain. Dry needling helps release these tight areas by reducing tension and improving muscle function.

Improves Circulation

The insertion of needles stimulates blood flow to the affected area. Increased circulation delivers oxygen and nutrients, promoting tissue repair and reducing inflammation.

Reduces Pain Signals

Dry needling interrupts pain signals sent to the brain and provides relief from discomfort. This effect is particularly beneficial for chronic pain associated with plantar fasciitis.

Enhances Flexibility

By loosening tight muscles and fascia, dry needling improves the range of motion in the foot and ankle, making it easier to move without pain.

Benefits of Dry Needling for Plantar Fasciitis

Dry needling offers a range of benefits for those struggling with plantar fasciitis, including:

  • Quick Pain Relief: Many patients experience noticeable improvement after just a few sessions.
  • Non-Invasive Treatment: Dry needling provides an effective alternative to surgery or medication.
  • Targets Root Causes: The therapy addresses underlying issues, such as muscle tension and trigger points.
  • Speeds Recovery: Enhanced blood flow and reduced inflammation accelerate healing.

What to Expect During a Dry Needling Session

If you’re new to dry needling, here’s what a typical session might look like:

  1. Initial Assessment: Your therapist will evaluate your condition and identify trigger points.
  2. Needle Insertion: Thin, sterile needles are carefully inserted into the targeted areas.
  3. Mild Sensations: You may feel a slight twitch or ache, which indicates the release of tension.
  4. Post-Treatment Advice: Your therapist may recommend stretches or exercises to maintain the benefits.

When to Seek Professional Care

While home remedies like rest and stretching can help, professional dry needling may be necessary if:

  • Pain persists despite self-care efforts.
  • You experience stiffness that limits mobility.
  • Symptoms worsen with activity or over time.
  • Other treatments have not provided relief.

Other Approaches to Support Plantar Fasciitis Recovery

To maximise the benefits of dry needling, consider the following:

  • Stretching Exercises: Regular stretches for the calf and foot can improve flexibility.
  • Orthotic Inserts: Custom insoles provide support and reduce strain on the plantar fascia.
  • Ice Therapy: Applying ice packs helps reduce inflammation and soothe pain.
  • Massage Therapy: Targeted foot massages release tension and promote relaxation.

Can Dry Needling Prevent Plantar Fasciitis?

While dry needling may not entirely prevent plantar fasciitis, it can reduce the risk by addressing contributing factors like tight muscles and poor circulation. Regular sessions keep the fascia and surrounding muscles healthy and less prone to injury.

Wrapping Up

Dry needling is a proven method for managing plantar fasciitis. By targeting trigger points, enhancing circulation and reducing pain, it offers a holistic approach to recovery. With professional care, you can regain mobility and enjoy a more active lifestyle.
