Georgia and Tessa were referred to me by a friend and I’m so glad they did! They’re incredibly knowledgeable, responsive and genuinely care about what they do. I started seeing them to help manage migraines and neck pains that I would get pretty frequently. I remember feeling quite nervous as I’d never been to a physio before, but I knew as soon as I started talking to them I was in safe hands! They really took the time to understand my situation, explained things clearly and it’s all made a huge difference. I simply cannot recommend them enough! :)

Can Dry Needling Help Bursitis

Can Dry Needling Help With Bursitis?

Bursitis can make even the simplest movements uncomfortable. This condition is caused by inflammation of the bursae, which are tiny, fluid-filled sacs that cushion your joints. It often leads to pain, stiffness and reduced mobility. If you’re exploring treatment options, you may be curious about dry needling and whether it could offer relief. Can dry needling help bursitis?

Absolutely. Dry needling targets muscle tension and inflammation, helping to ease pain and promote recovery. By addressing underlying issues, this therapy can provide relief and improve joint function.

In this article, we’ll explore how dry needling works, its potential benefits for bursitis and when it’s time to seek expert advice. Read on to see if this approach could be the right fit for you.

Can Dry Needling Help With Bursitis? A Quick Overview

Yes, dry needling can effectively relieve pain and inflammation caused by bursitis. As it targets tight muscles and helps improve blood flow, this therapy reduces pressure on the inflamed bursa and promotes healing. It’s a non-invasive option to restore joint function and mobility.

What Is Bursitis?

Bursitis occurs when the bursae, small sacs of fluid that cushion your joints, become inflamed. This inflammation often leads to pain, stiffness and swelling in areas like the shoulders, elbows, hips and knees. Common causes include:

  • Overuse: Repetitive movements or prolonged pressure on a joint.
  • Injury: Direct trauma to the joint area.
  • Poor Posture: Misalignment that puts stress on certain joints.
  • Underlying Conditions: Conditions like arthritis or gout that contribute to joint inflammation.

How Does Dry Needling Work for Bursitis?

Dry needling is a targeted therapy that uses thin needles to release tension and improve circulation in the muscles surrounding the affected joint. Here’s how it helps with bursitis:

Releases Muscle Tension

Tight muscles around the inflamed bursa can increase pressure and exacerbate pain. Dry needling targets these tight spots, known as trigger points, to release tension and reduce discomfort.

Improves Circulation

The needle insertion stimulates blood flow to the area, delivering oxygen and nutrients essential for healing. This helps reduce inflammation and speeds up recovery.

Reduces Pain Signals

Dry needling disrupts the pain signals sent to the brain. It provides relief from chronic pain associated with bursitis.

Enhances Joint Mobility

By loosening tight muscles and reducing inflammation, dry needling improves joint mobility, so daily activities become more manageable.

Benefits of Dry Needling for Bursitis

Dry needling offers several advantages for managing bursitis:

  • Quick Pain Relief: Many individuals experience noticeable improvements after a few sessions.
  • Non-Invasive Treatment: It provides an alternative to medications or surgery.
  • Targets Root Causes: The therapy addresses muscle tension and poor circulation, key factors in bursitis.
  • Accelerates Healing: Improved blood flow supports faster recovery and reduces inflammation.

What to Expect During a Dry Needling Session

If you’re new to dry needling, here’s what a typical session might involve:

  1. Initial Consultation: Your therapist will assess your condition and identify trigger points.
  2. Needle Insertion: Thin, sterile needles are inserted into specific areas to release tension.
  3. Mild Sensations: You may feel a brief twitch or ache, which indicates the release of muscle tension.
  4. Aftercare Advice: Your therapist may suggest stretches or exercises to maintain the session’s benefits.

When to Seek Professional Care

While self-care methods like rest and ice can provide temporary relief, professional dry needling is often necessary for long-term improvement. Consider seeking treatment if you experience:

  • Persistent joint pain that limits daily activities.
  • Swelling or stiffness that doesn’t improve with home remedies.
  • Recurring flare-ups despite other treatments.
  • A history of joint injuries or chronic conditions.

Best Practices to Complement Dry Needling

To maximise the benefits of your dry needling sessions, consider these complementary strategies:

  1. Gentle Exercises: Low-impact activities like swimming or stretching help maintain mobility.
  2. Apply Ice or Heat: Ice reduces swelling, while heat relaxes tight muscles.
  3. Use Proper Posture: Avoid positions that put excessive strain on your joints.
  4. Stay Hydrated: Drinking water helps flush out toxins released during treatment.
  5. Follow Up Regularly: Consistent sessions ensure lasting benefits.

Can Dry Needling Prevent Bursitis?

While dry needling may not entirely prevent bursitis, it can reduce the risk by addressing contributing factors like muscle tension and poor joint mechanics. Regular therapy keeps your muscles and joints healthy, reducing the likelihood of inflammation.

Final Thoughts

Dry needling is an effective treatment for bursitis, offering pain relief, reduced inflammation and improved mobility. This non-invasive therapy addresses the underlying causes of bursitis and provides a holistic approach to recovery.
