Have been seeing Georgia from flexifit for around one year after being referred by my partner. Came in with bad neck pain on my right side after 1-2 years of remedial massages trying to fix but Georgia quickly diagnosed an issue with my shoulder causing the strain/pain . I am now pain free in my neck and mobility has improved drastically. I have also recently torn my left meniscus and Georgia has gone above and beyond getting me back to normal after surgery . Couldn’t recommend enough phenomenal service .

Georgia is a legend. I’ve had over a decade of various practitioners after a neck injury in childhood, unfortunately made worse by a chiropractic adjustment in 2021. The nerve pain that followed set up a vicious cycle of progressive weakening, regular flares, vertigo & despair..until I found Georgia. Together with her guidance, amazing hands on care & reformer Pilates I am finally managing my pain and now have the luxury of working towards gaining in strength and fitness. Thank you Georgia! ❤️🙏

In this article, we’ll explore how dry needling works for migraines, its benefits and how you can determine if it’s the right treatment for you.

Quick Overview: Is Dry Needling Good for Migraines?

Dry needling can be an effective way to manage migraines, especially if muscle tension is a trigger. By targeting tight knots (trigger points) in the neck and shoulders, it helps release tension, improve circulation and reduce pain signals to the brain. What Are Migraines and What Causes Them?

Migraines are more than just headaches—they are neurological conditions that cause severe, throbbing pain, often accompanied by:

  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Visual disturbances (aura)
  • Neck stiffness and muscle tension

Common Migraine Triggers

Migraines can be triggered by a variety of factors, including:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Poor posture and muscle strain
  • Hormonal changes
  • Certain foods and drinks (e.g., caffeine, alcohol, processed foods)
  • Lack of sleep or irregular sleep patterns

How Does Dry Needling Help with Migraines?

Think of dry needling as a reset button for muscle tension. It targets those stubborn knots, called myofascial trigger points, that could be fueling your migraines. By releasing them, your muscles relax, stress levels drop and blood flow improves, all of which help keep headaches in check. It’s not a cure, but for many, it’s a game-changer in migraine management.

Key Benefits of Dry Needling for Migraines

By easing muscle tension and improving circulation, dry needling can help reduce migraine frequency and intensity. Here’s what it can do for you:

1. Reduces Muscle Tension

Tight muscles in the neck, shoulders and upper back are common migraine triggers. Dry needling releases these muscle knots by reducing tension and preventing headache onset.

2. Improves Blood Flow

By stimulating circulation, dry needling helps deliver oxygen and nutrients to affected areas. It also reduces inflammation and pain sensitivity.

3. Decreases Pain Signals

Dry needling interrupts pain pathways. It prevents the brain from overreacting to migraine triggers. This can lead to fewer migraine attacks over time.

4. Lowers Stress Levels

Since stress is a major migraine trigger, dry needling’s ability to promote relaxation can help prevent stress-induced migraines.

Dry Needling vs Other Migraine Treatments

When it comes to migraine relief, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Dry needling, massage therapy, medication and acupuncture each take a different approach.

  • Dry needling targets muscle tension and circulation. It is ideal for migraines linked to tight muscles or poor posture.
  • Massage therapy helps with general headache relief by reducing stress and promoting relaxation.
  • Medication blocks pain signals or reduces inflammation, offering quick relief for acute migraines.
  • Acupuncture focuses on balancing the body’s energy flow, which can support overall headache management.

What to Expect During a Dry Needling Session

If you’re considering dry needling for migraines, here’s what you can expect:

Step 1: Consultation

Your physiotherapist will assess your migraine history and muscle tension to determine the best approach.

Step 2: Targeting Trigger Points

Fine, sterile needles are inserted into muscle knots in the neck, shoulders and head to relieve tension.

Step 3: Immediate Relief

Some patients feel relief right after the session, while others experience improvements over multiple sessions.

Step 4: Post-Treatment Care

Your therapist may recommend gentle exercises and hydration to maintain the benefits of dry needling.

Is Dry Needling Right for You?

Dry needling is highly effective for migraine sufferers who experience:

  • Frequent tension headaches
  • Neck and shoulder tightness
  • Stress-related migraines
  • Limited relief from medication alone

If you’re unsure, our experts at FlexiFit Physiotherapy can help assess your condition and recommend the best treatment plan.
