I’ve been seeing both Tess & Georgia for the last 12+ months and they’ve been nothing short of miracle workers! Not only is the appointment process seamless and always easy - the quality of service and care delivered is consistently at such a high level, and you’re made to feel comfortable straight away, both from their expertise and calm approach. They’ve helped me with back, arm and wrist pain management from being in a long term desk role, to now prenatal Physio and care around keeping my body strong and ready for what’s ahead. Thank you ladies, I appreciate all the work you continue to do and this is such a valuable clinic to have in our community!

I’d never really used a physio consistently before, but it’s now a key part of my routine to maintain my body and correct the bad habits and posture that life inevitably creates. Georgia and Tessa have been fantastic, highly knowledgeable, genuinely caring, and clearly passionate about what they do. They’re a real staple in the community and it’s easy to see why they’re so well known, respected, and loved. Highly recommend.

Have been seeing Georgia from flexifit for around one year after being referred by my partner. Came in with bad neck pain on my right side after 1-2 years of remedial massages trying to fix but Georgia quickly diagnosed an issue with my shoulder causing the strain/pain . I am now pain free in my neck and mobility has improved drastically. I have also recently torn my left meniscus and Georgia has gone above and beyond getting me back to normal after surgery . Couldn’t recommend enough phenomenal service .

Georgia is a legend. I’ve had over a decade of various practitioners after a neck injury in childhood, unfortunately made worse by a chiropractic adjustment in 2021. The nerve pain that followed set up a vicious cycle of progressive weakening, regular flares, vertigo & despair..until I found Georgia. Together with her guidance, amazing hands on care & reformer Pilates I am finally managing my pain and now have the luxury of working towards gaining in strength and fitness. Thank you Georgia! ❤️🙏

Is Dry Needling Better Than Massage

Is Dry Needling Better Than Massage?

If you’re struggling with muscle pain, stiffness or injury recovery, you’ve probably considered different treatment options. Two popular choices are dry needling and massage therapy—but which one is better for you? Is dry needling better than massage or is it the other way around?

Both methods offer significant benefits, but they work in different ways. Dry needling targets trigger points using thin needles to release muscle tension, while massage therapy involves hands-on manipulation to relax muscles, improve circulation and promote healing. Depending on your condition and pain levels, one treatment may be more effective than the other.

In this article, we’ll break down the key differences between dry needling and massage, their benefits and how to decide which one is right for you.

Quick Overview: Is Dry Needling Better Than Massage?

Neither dry needling nor massage is objectively better. It depends on your needs. Dry needling targets deep muscle knots and trigger points, making it ideal for chronic pain, tightness and injury recovery. Massage therapy, however, focuses on circulation, muscle relaxation and stress relief, so it is a better choice for general soreness and well-being.

If you’re dealing with persistent pain or muscle dysfunction, dry needling may offer more targeted relief. If you need relaxation and overall muscle recovery, massage might be the way to go.

Keep reading as we break down both therapies in detail.

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a therapeutic technique where thin, sterile needles are inserted into trigger points—tight muscle bands that cause pain and restricted movement. This stimulates the body’s natural healing response, promoting pain relief, muscle relaxation and improved mobility.

How It Works

  • Identifies and releases knots and tight muscles.
  • Improves blood circulation to the affected area.
  • Stimulates the nervous system, reducing pain signals.
  • Enhances muscle function and flexibility.

Who Can Benefit from Dry Needling?

Dry needling is ideal for individuals experiencing:

  • Chronic muscle pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Postural imbalances
  • Trigger points or muscle knots
  • Limited mobility due to muscle tightness

What Is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy involves manual manipulation of muscles and soft tissues to enhance relaxation, improve circulation and ease muscle tension. It is a holistic approach that benefits both physical and mental well-being.

How It Works

  • Uses pressure, kneading and stretching techniques to release tension.
  • Enhances blood flow for faster muscle recovery.
  • Reduces stress hormones and promotes relaxation.
  • Supports joint flexibility and range of motion.

Who Can Benefit from Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is beneficial for individuals with:

  • General muscle stiffness
  • Tension headaches
  • Chronic stress and anxiety
  • Reduced flexibility
  • Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS)

Key Differences Between Dry Needling and Massage

Both dry needling and massage therapy help with muscle relief, but they work in different ways:

Technique

  • Dry needling: Uses fine needles to release muscle knots and trigger points.
  • Massage: A hands-on approach that eases tension, promotes relaxation and improves circulation.

Effectiveness

  • Dry needling: Targets deep muscle pain and is ideal for injuries and chronic tightness.
  • Massage: Provides gradual relief for soreness, stress and overall well-being.

Pain and Sensation

  • Dry needling: Can cause mild discomfort or a twitch response in the muscle.
  • Massage: Usually relaxing, though some techniques apply firm pressure.

Speed of Relief

  • Dry needling: Works quickly for targeted pain relief.
  • Massage: Provides slower, cumulative benefits over time.

If you need deep, fast relief, dry needling may be the better option. For overall relaxation and muscle recovery, massage is a great choice.

Which One Should You Choose?

The right choice depends on your specific needs:

Choose Dry Needling If:

  • You have persistent muscle knots and deep tissue pain.
  • You need targeted treatment for injuries or chronic conditions.
  • You want to increase mobility and muscle activation.

Choose Massage Therapy If:

  • You need general relaxation and stress relief.
  • You suffer from mild to moderate muscle soreness.
  • You prefer a hands-on, soothing treatment.

For the best results, some individuals combine both treatments, using dry needling for deeper muscle relief and massage therapy for relaxation and circulation improvement.

Final Thoughts

Both dry needling and massage therapy offer unique benefits depending on your health goals. Dry needling works exceptionally well for chronic muscle pain, sports injuries and deep trigger point release, while massage therapy provides holistic relaxation, improved circulation and stress relief.
