I’ve been seeing both Tess & Georgia for the last 12+ months and they’ve been nothing short of miracle workers! Not only is the appointment process seamless and always easy - the quality of service and care delivered is consistently at such a high level, and you’re made to feel comfortable straight away, both from their expertise and calm approach. Thank you ladies, I appreciate all the work you continue to do and this is such a valuable clinic to have in our community!

Have been seeing Georgia from flexifit for around one year after being referred by my partner. Came in with bad neck pain on my right side after 1-2 years of remedial massages trying to fix but Georgia quickly diagnosed an issue with my shoulder causing the strain/pain . I am now pain free in my neck and mobility has improved drastically. I have also recently torn my left meniscus and Georgia has gone above and beyond getting me back to normal after surgery . Couldn’t recommend enough phenomenal service .

Georgia is a legend. I’ve had over a decade of various practitioners after a neck injury in childhood, unfortunately made worse by a chiropractic adjustment in 2021. The nerve pain that followed set up a vicious cycle of progressive weakening, regular flares, vertigo & despair..until I found Georgia. Together with her guidance, amazing hands on care & reformer Pilates I am finally managing my pain and now have the luxury of working towards gaining in strength and fitness. Thank you Georgia! ❤️🙏

Is Dry Needling Worth It? A Quick Overview

Absolutely. Dry needling has emerged as an effective treatment for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. How Does Dry Needling Work?

Dry needling works by targeting trigger points, which are tight bands of muscle fibres. These trigger points often result from muscle overuse, injury or stress.

When a fine needle is inserted into these points, it can help release the tightness, reduce pain and improve blood flow. This process stimulates a local twitch response, which is an involuntary contraction of the muscle. Such a response can help in breaking the cycle of pain and muscle tension.

By enhancing blood circulation to the affected area, dry needling promotes healing and reduces inflammation. The immediate effect is often pain relief and a reduction in muscle stiffness, leading to improved mobility.

Conditions Addressed by Dry Needling

Dry needling is a versatile treatment used to address a variety of musculoskeletal issues. Here are some of the common conditions it can treat:

Chronic Back Pain

Chronic back pain, often debilitating, finds relief through dry needling. By targeting the deep muscle knots that contribute to persistent pain, this technique helps restore function and reduce discomfort.

Neck Pain

Neck pain, whether from poor posture or injury, responds well to dry needling. The treatment targets the strained muscles and alleviates the tension, providing significant pain relief.

Headaches and Migraines

Tension headaches and migraines often stem from tight muscles in the neck and upper back. Dry needling can release these trigger points and offer relief from headache symptoms.

Joint Pain (e.g. Shoulder, Knee, Hip)

Joint pain, particularly in the shoulder, knee and hip, can be effectively managed with dry needling. By addressing the surrounding muscle tightness, it reduces the stress on the joints and improves mobility.

Sports Injuries

Athletes frequently suffer from muscle strains and overuse injuries. Dry needling accelerates recovery by reducing muscle tension and enhancing blood flow to the injured area.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia patients deal with widespread muscle pain and tenderness. Dry needling offers relief by targeting the specific points of muscle pain, which helps to reduce the overall discomfort.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis, an inflammation of the tendons, can cause significant pain and limit movement. Dry needling reduces the muscle tension around the tendons, promoting healing and reducing pain.

Benefits of Dry Needling

Dry needling offers numerous benefits that make it a compelling choice for many patients. Here are some key advantages of this technique:

Pain Relief

Dry needling can provide significant relief from both chronic and acute pain. As it releases tight muscle bands and trigger points, it directly addresses the source of pain.

Improved Mobility

Reduced muscle tension leads to improved range of motion. This benefit is particularly valuable for individuals with joint pain or athletes looking to enhance their performance.

Accelerated Recovery

Athletes and active individuals often turn to dry needling to speed up recovery from injuries. The treatment promotes faster healing by improving blood flow and reducing inflammation.

Reduced Muscle Tension

One of the most immediate benefits of dry needling is the reduction in muscle tightness. This not only alleviates discomfort but also improves muscle function.

Enhanced Blood Flow

The needling process increases blood flow to the treated areas, which helps in faster healing and reduces inflammation.

Who Can Opt for Dry Needling?

Dry needling is suitable for various individuals experiencing musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction, including:

  • Athletes with Sports Injuries: Athletes suffering from strains, sprains and overuse injuries can benefit from dry needling. The treatment helps in reducing muscle tension and promoting faster recovery.
  • Patients with Chronic Pain Conditions: Individuals dealing with chronic conditions such as back pain, neck pain and fibromyalgia can find relief through dry needling. It targets the root cause of the pain, providing long-term benefits.
  • Individuals with Muscle Tension or Trigger Points: Anyone experiencing muscle tension or tight knots can benefit from dry needling. It effectively releases the tightness and improves muscle function.
  • People Recovering from Surgery or Injury: Post-surgical patients and those recovering from injuries can use dry needling to accelerate the healing process. It reduces muscle tension and enhances blood flow to the affected area.
  • Those Seeking Non-Pharmacological Pain Relief: Individuals looking for non-drug-based pain relief options can consider dry needling. It offers a natural and effective way to manage pain without relying on medications.

Who Should Avoid Dry Needling?

While dry needling can be beneficial for many, certain individuals should avoid this procedure. Here are some cases:

  • Pregnant Women: Pregnant women are generally advised to avoid dry needling due to the potential risks involved. The treatment may cause contractions or other complications.
  • Individuals with a Needle Phobia: People who have a severe fear of needles may find dry needling extremely uncomfortable. The anxiety and stress associated with the procedure may outweigh the benefits.
  • Patients with Certain Blood Disorders: Individuals with bleeding disorders or those on blood-thinning medications should avoid dry needling. The procedure may increase the risk of bruising or bleeding.
  • Those with Skin Infections at the Treatment Site: If there is an active skin infection at the treatment site, dry needling should be avoided. The procedure could worsen the infection or spread it to other areas.
  • People with an Uncontrolled Chronic Disease (e.g. diabetes): Patients with uncontrolled chronic conditions, such as diabetes, should avoid dry needling. The procedure may interfere with their overall health management and cause complications.

Final Thoughts

Is dry needling worth it? Definitely. Dry needling is highly effective for managing musculoskeletal pain, offering immediate pain relief, improved mobility and faster recovery. While some individuals should avoid it, most people, including athletes and those with chronic pain, can benefit greatly.

If you’re considering dry needling, consult with a qualified healthcare provider to determine if it’s the right option for you and to ensure a safe and effective treatment plan.
