Physio Review I can’t recommend these two sisters highly enough! They are incredibly hands-on and skilled, and after each session, I can genuinely feel the blood flow improving. I always leave feeling so much better. I thoroughly enjoy my physio sessions and make sure not to be late because I know how beneficial they are. Beyond their expertise, they’re also super friendly, making every visit a great experience. Their boutique clinic in Collaroy has such a welcoming atmosphere. If you’re looking for top-notch physios who truly care, this is the place to go!

Georgia has been able to massively reduce the neck and back pain that had developed due to long hours I spent sitting at a desk and hunched over one screen or another. I had also developed a reduced range of motion and stiffness and tightness in my neck. Georgia has significantly improved that as well. I highly recommend Georgia! She also happens to be smart, funny, open-minded, and very warm and welcoming.

The girls at FlexiFit have literally put me back together. Whilst still a work in progress; the difference from when I started going to them, to now, is chalk & cheese. Not to mention the incredible customer service & the genuinely kind people Tess & Georgia are. I highly HIGHLY recommend them for all your needs !!

Hands down the best physio experience I’ve ever had! Georgia and Tessa are absolute incredible —super kind and just really great people to be around. I came in feeling pretty rough, and the difference after my sessions has been amazing. I’m moving so much better and feeling stronger already. They really take the time to understand what you need and make the whole process easy and enjoyable.

Georgia and Flexifit physio are the absolute bomb. I had a bunged AC joint in my shoulder and bursitis. I had immense sharp pain and could not do anything that I usually did. After a few sessions from Georgia and doing (only half) the rehab myself that she suggested,😝 my shoulder is back to 100%. And I am back surfing every day and able to play the drums again. I could not have done it without her physical manipulation skills and Motivational advice. Thank you so much For helping me avoid surgery.

Fantastic service from both Georgia and Tessa. Always very accommodating of last minute changes. Always have a smile on their faces and a friendly and professional demeanor. Top notch service, highly recommended.

I’ve seen both Tessa and Georgia on and off for years; they’re the BEST. Both of them are so knowledgeable when it comes to finding the right spots to release tension. You also get a great chat, they are genuinely interested in their clients. You’ll need to take a deep breath when they hit those tricky spots but it’s worth it, I’m addicted!!

I’ve been a patient of both for many years and they have helped me (and my kids) through some pretty gruelling pain and injuries. I was referred to Georgia by an Orthopaedic Surgeon following an elbow fracture. I couldn’t be more happy with Flexifit - my elbow is improving each week and the practice is a pleasure to visit.

Georgia could not have been more caring and wonderful with our 13 year old daughter. Her treatments were not only effective but she also offered lots of great advice and a plan for going forward. Georgia also treated me and it was so good I only needed one session. Can’t recommend FlexiFit highly enough. Thanks Georgia! 🙏🏻💙

Knowledgeable and cost effective treatment

Georgia is a brilliant physio. She quickly diagnosed my problem and worked on a plan with me to get me moving again.

Georgia was awesome treating me when I was experiencing quite severe knee pain - she gave me a series of exercises as well as her treatment strategies with a very successful result. Thank-you so much Flexifit

Georgia provides exceptional service and has helped me immensely with my chronic lower back issues and degenerative arthritis. She works hard to keep my pain managed and provides me with knowledgeable advice specific to my injuries. If you are seeking a physio who truly cares and works hard to target specific issues, then look no further; it's so great to walk out of her clinic with complete relief.

I have been attending this practice since they opened and have had no hesitation in recommending Flexifit to my friends. Georgia and Tess are both professional women and the studio is so calming, beautifully spotlessly clean. It’s a treat to attend their business. The work they both do is amazing.

Flexifit is absolutely brilliant! Georgia has been my Physio for the past couple of months and she has been helping me with neck pain/migraines and knee pain. She has provided me with incredible hands-on physical support, as well as a specific and structured at-home exercise plan, that she created and adjusted based on my circumstances. Alongside the actual Physiotherapy aspect, the team at Flexifit have always been super accommodating towards my work schedule and have been happy to shuffle around appointments at the last minute. They are amazing and I can’t thank Georgia enough!

Georgia has treated me for three separate issues over the last four years - both in Gordon and now Collaroy I have been impressed with her competency and professionalism on each occasion. My local GP in the upper North Shore was so impressed with how well Georgia has treated my latest issue, he took all her details and said he was thinking of referring his patients that were prepared to travel from the upper North Shore to Collayoy.

Thank god I found this place. I have been suffering for years with neck and back pain, after playing baseball for years, and being a brow and lash artist for the last 5 years, I was constantly in pain and my posture was terrible. Georgia has been working her magic on me for a few months now and I have never felt so good. I can actually move my neck freely now without pain, and Georgia has given me some fantastic advise on how to best manage my training sessions with my personal trainer and the way in which I sit during work. The studio is so clean and provides a relaxing environment, and Georgia and her sister are so lovely and knowledgeable.

I have seen Georgia for a very troublesome shoulder issue I had for years. I am not able to explain adequately how impressed I am with the final result. I still cannot believe I have a pain free shoulder. Thank you Flexifit 🙏.

For the past few months I have had the pleasure of receiving physiotherapy treatment from Tessa at FlexiFit Physiotherapy in Collaroy for an ongoing neck & back issue, and I must say it has been an exceptional experience. From the moment I walked into the clinic, I was greeted with a warm and friendly atmosphere, which immediately put me at ease. Tessa demonstrated a high level of professionalism and expertise throughout my sessions. She took the time to thoroughly assess my condition, listening attentively to my concerns and addressing them with the utmost care. Her extensive knowledge and understanding of the human body were evident in her ability to accurately diagnose and develop a personalised treatment plan tailored to my specific needs. What truly impressed me was Tessa’'s ability to explain complex concepts in a clear and concise manner. She patiently guided me through each step of the treatment process, ensuring that I understood the purpose and benefits of each exercise or technique. This not only empowered me to actively participate in my own recovery but also instilled a sense of trust and confidence in her abilities. I am delighted to say that thanks to Tessa's expertise and guidance, I have experienced significant improvement in my condition. Her holistic approach, combining manual therapy, exercise prescription, and education, has not only alleviated my pain but also equipped me with the tools to prevent future injuries. I highly recommend FlexiFit Physio to anyone in need of physiotherapy services. Their professionalism, expertise, and genuine care for their patients make them an outstanding practitioner in their field. I am very grateful for the positive impact they have had on my health and well-being.

I can’t recommend the team at Flexifit highly enough! I’ve had chronic shoulder problems for 2 years and seen other specialists which hadn’t solved the problem. Tessa at Flexifit sourced the problem and after the first session, my shoulders were sitting aligned - the first time that’s happened in 2 years. I felt validated with the pain I was in and feel so much more positive about my treatment pathway with Flexifit.

Georgia’s brilliant and excels in all the areas I want from a physio - diagnosing/figuring out the prob, massage and physical work, and then exercises to do at home to help long term. Worth the 40 minute drive!

I've been seeing Georgia and Tessa from FlexiFit for the last year, and they have both been outstanding. They are caring, compassionate and highly skilled. They have assisted me with managing multiple injuries and I've referred several members of my family who are equally impressed with their services! Thank you, Georgia and Tessa, you guys are amazing!

Common Causes of Lower Back Pain

Understanding the root causes of lower back pain is crucial for effective treatment. The most frequent culprits include:

  • Muscle or Ligament Strain: Repeated heavy lifting or a sudden awkward movement can strain back muscles and spinal ligaments. The chronic strain, often due to poor posture, can also lead to persistent discomfort.
  • Bulging or Ruptured Disks: Disks act as cushions between the bones (vertebrae) in your spine. The soft material inside a disk can bulge or rupture and press on a nerve, causing pain that may radiate to other areas.
  • Arthritis and Other Conditions: Osteoarthritis can affect the lower back. In some cases, arthritis in the spine can lead to a narrowing of the space around the spinal cord, a condition called spinal stenosis.
  • Poor Posture and Sedentary Lifestyle: Long hours of sitting at a desk and poor posture can exacerbate back pain. It’s crucial to incorporate ergonomic principles into work environments and daily routines to alleviate and prevent pain.

How Massage Helps to Reduce Lower Back Pain?

Massage therapy provides numerous benefits that aid in the relief of lower back pain:

  • Increasing Blood Flow: Enhanced circulation brings fresh nutrients and oxygen to back tissues, helping to heal and reduce tightness.
  • Reducing Muscle Tension: Massage techniques can relieve muscle spasms and tension, which often contribute to back pain. This relaxation of the muscles promotes pain relief and healing.
  • Enhancing Flexibility: Massage can improve the range of motion, aiding in your back’s recovery and preventing further injury.
  • Promoting Relaxation: Reducing stress and promoting relaxation through massage can also indirectly relieve pain and make it easier to manage and treat.

The Different Types of Massages for Lower Back Pain

The right type of massage can make a significant difference in managing discomfort, promoting healing, and restoring mobility. Here are some of the best massages for lower back issues, each tailored to different needs and conditions:

Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is often recommended as a starting point for those experiencing lower back pain. It uses a variety of techniques, including effleurage (long, gliding strokes), petrissage (kneading) and tapping, which help to stimulate blood circulation and muscle relaxation. This type of massage is particularly beneficial for inducing a state of calm and relaxation, making it ideal for those who are new to massage therapy or have general sensitivity.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage goes further into the body’s musculature to reach the deep layers of muscle and connective tissue. It’s especially beneficial for individuals with longstanding discomfort and those who experience habitual muscle tension. By applying sustained pressure using slow, deep strokes, this massage works to break down scar tissue and reduce tension in muscles and tissue. It can be quite therapeutic for those suffering from chronic back pain stemming from muscle knots and other conditions.

Sports Massage

Contrary to popular belief, sports massage isn’t only for athletes. It benefits anyone dealing with injuries or muscle pain due to repetitive motion or overuse even from daily activities like typing or driving.

Sports massage combines techniques from Swedish massage and deep tissue massage but focuses more on areas stressed by repetitive and sometimes aggressive movements. It helps by alleviating stress, increasing flexibility and enhancing circulation, which can reduce muscle stiffness and back pain.

Trigger Point Therapy

This specialised form of massage targets trigger points, which are tight areas within muscle tissue that cause pain in other, often unrelated parts of the body. Trigger point therapy involves cycles of pressure and release that help to decrease the tightness of the points, providing relief from pain and helping to re-establish normal muscle function. It’s a valuable technique for those whose back pain is linked to referred pain from muscle knots.

Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu, a form of Japanese bodywork based on concepts in traditional Chinese medicine, uses rhythmic sequences of pressure points to stimulate the body’s vital energy (known as ‘chi’). Practitioners use fingers, thumbs and palms to apply pressure to various points on the body, promoting energy flow and relaxation, as well as relieving muscular tension and back pain. This technique is known for its effectiveness in reducing stress and enhancing overall wellness.

Hot Stone Massage

In a hot stone massage, smooth, heated stones are placed on specific parts of the body, including the spine, stomach, chest, face, palms, feet and toes, to deepen relaxation and promote circulation in your muscles. The warmth of the stones is effective in releasing tension and may allow the therapist to address specific problem areas with more detailed work or deeper pressure.

Myofascial Release

Myofascial release focuses on the fascia, the connective tissue surrounding muscles. It addresses the fibrous bands of the connective tissues or fascia, that envelop, connect and support the muscles. The technique involves applying gentle, sustained pressure into the connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.

Myofascial release can be particularly helpful for those experiencing pain stemming not just from the muscles, but also from the fascial tissues that connect and surround muscles and other internal structures.

How to Choose the Right Massage for Your Back Pain

Choosing the right massage therapy for your back pain is crucial to effectively alleviating discomfort and promoting healing. This decision should be informed by a combination of personal needs and professional advice. Here’s a deeper look at the factors to consider when selecting the most suitable massage therapy:

Assessing Your Pain Level and Cause

The first step in choosing the right massage is accurately identifying the level and source of your pain. Is your pain acute, appearing suddenly from a recent injury or is it chronic, developing over time?

Understanding whether your pain stems from muscle strain, a sedentary lifestyle, arthritis or other spinal issues can significantly influence the choice of massage techniques. For instance, a Swedish massage might be ideal for stress-related tension and minor pain, while deep tissue therapy could be better suited for chronic stiffness and muscular knots.

Consulting with a Professional Therapist

Engaging with a qualified massage therapist is essential. A professional therapist can conduct a thorough assessment of your condition, possibly consulting your medical history, to recommend the most effective massage techniques tailored to your specific needs. Their expertise not only ensures that the therapy is beneficial but also safeguards against any practices that might exacerbate the pain.

Considering Your Personal Preferences and Comfort

Personal comfort and preferences play a significant role in the effectiveness of massage therapy. You must communicate openly with your therapist about your comfort levels and any past experiences with massage.

Some individuals may prefer lighter, more relaxing techniques that ease tension without deep pressure, while others might find more substantial relief from techniques that apply firmer pressure to reach deeper layers of tissue.

Frequency and Duration of Therapy Sessions

The frequency and duration can vary depending on several factors including the severity of your pain, your schedule and your body’s response to treatment. Some conditions might benefit from shorter, more frequent sessions, while others might find longer, less frequent sessions more beneficial. Establishing a tailored therapy plan that considers these elements can lead to more effective relief and quicker recovery.

Combining Different Techniques

Sometimes, a combination of different massage techniques can offer the best results. For example, incorporating elements of trigger point therapy into a deep tissue massage can address specific areas of tension and broader muscle groups simultaneously.

Discuss with your therapist about integrating various massage styles to tailor a session that meets your unique pain relief needs.

Key Takeaways

Massage therapy presents a viable and effective option for those suffering from lower back pain. With a variety of techniques available, from the gentle strokes of Swedish massage to the focused pressure of trigger point therapy, there’s a method to suit every type of pain and personal preference. It’s important to consult with a professional massage therapist to tailor the approach to your specific needs, ensuring you achieve the best possible outcomes.
