Have been seeing Georgia from flexifit for around one year after being referred by my partner. Came in with bad neck pain on my right side after 1-2 years of remedial massages trying to fix but Georgia quickly diagnosed an issue with my shoulder causing the strain/pain . I am now pain free in my neck and mobility has improved drastically. I have also recently torn my left meniscus and Georgia has gone above and beyond getting me back to normal after surgery . Couldn’t recommend enough phenomenal service .

Georgia is a legend. I’ve had over a decade of various practitioners after a neck injury in childhood, unfortunately made worse by a chiropractic adjustment in 2021. The nerve pain that followed set up a vicious cycle of progressive weakening, regular flares, vertigo & despair..until I found Georgia. Together with her guidance, amazing hands on care & reformer Pilates I am finally managing my pain and now have the luxury of working towards gaining in strength and fitness. Thank you Georgia! ❤️🙏

What Happens To The Body After Deep Tissue Massage?

What Happens To The Body After Deep Tissue Massage?

Do you often feel stiff and sore, with muscle tension that won’t seem to go away? A deep tissue massage might be the solution you need.

This powerful therapy targets the deeper layers of muscle tissue to alleviate pain, improve mobility and release stress. But what happens to the body after deep tissue massage

After a deep tissue massage, many experience a range of sensations from mild tenderness in targeted areas to a general state of relaxation. While soreness is common, it is typically mild and a sign of the body’s natural healing process at work. The most noticeable after-effects often include feeling relaxed and a heightened sense of hydration necessity.

Curious about how to manage these effects and make the most of your massage? Read on to discover essential tips for post-massage care.

What Happens To The Body After Deep Tissue Massage? A Quick Overview

After undergoing a deep tissue massage, your body goes through a transformative process. Initially, you may feel tender in the areas that were intensely worked on, which is a normal part of the healing process. As the deeper layers of muscle are manipulated, blood flow improves, facilitating the removal of toxins and helping muscles recover. You’re likely to notice a significant reduction in pain and an increase in flexibility. Additionally, many people report feeling deeply relaxed and clear-headed after the session, ready to tackle their daily routines with renewed vigour.

What to Expect After a Deep Tissue Massage

After a deep tissue massage, most individuals experience a combination of relief and mild soreness, which is a natural response of the body to the intensive techniques used during the session. This sensation is often accompanied by a profound feeling of relaxation, which can last for several hours to days. It’s important to note that these aftereffects are signs that the body is adjusting and healing.

A deep tissue massage targets the deepest layers of muscle and connective tissue, helping to break down knots and improve blood circulation. This process often results in reduced pain and enhanced flexibility. Many report significant improvements in range of motion and decreased discomfort in previously stiff or painful areas, which demonstrates the direct benefits of this therapy.

The benefits of deep tissue massage extend beyond the physical. Those who undergo this massage often experience emotional releases and a noticeable improvement in their mental clarity after a session. This can be attributed to the stress-reducing effects of massage, which help to calm the mind and reduce anxiety levels.

Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is more than just a way to relieve stress and pain; it can enhance your overall quality of life. Targeting deep muscle layers unlocks tension and promotes healing, which offers benefits that go beyond the massage session.

Regular deep tissue massage can lead to significant improvements in both physical health and emotional well-being. Check out the benefits below:

Relieves Chronic Pain

Deep tissue massage effectively reduces chronic pain by directly targeting the underlying causes, such as muscle tension and knots. By applying sustained pressure using slow, deep strokes, this massage technique helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue in the muscles, improving elasticity and reducing pain.

Regular sessions can significantly alleviate chronic conditions like lower back pain, arthritis and muscle injuries.

Improves Blood Pressure

Research has indicated that deep tissue massage can lower high blood pressure, an effect attributed to the stimulation of pressure receptors that prompt vasodilation in the blood vessels. This response helps reduce blood pressure and improves overall blood circulation, which then enhances the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the tissues and organs.

Enhances Muscle Recovery

Athletes and individuals engaged in regular physical activities can benefit immensely from deep tissue massage. It helps reduce muscle fatigue and soreness post-exercise by facilitating the removal of lactic acid and other waste products. The improved circulation also promotes quicker healing of micro-tears and injuries, allowing for a faster return to physical activities.

Reduces Anxiety and Stress

The mental health benefits of deep tissue massage are as significant as the physical. It is known to lower levels of cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone, while increasing the levels of serotonin and dopamine, which are neurotransmitters associated with feelings of happiness and well-being. This hormonal adjustment helps alleviate stress, reduce anxiety and foster a more positive mood state.

Boosts Immunity

By mitigating stress and improving circulation, deep tissue massage can strengthen the immune system. Stress reduction is crucial because chronic stress can weaken the immune system and make the body more susceptible to infections.

Additionally, enhanced circulation can better mobilise the cells involved in the body’s immune response, which helps to defend against illnesses and maintain overall health.

How Long Does the Effects of Deep Tissue Massage Last?

The duration of the benefits from a deep tissue massage can vary greatly among individuals, influenced by several key factors.

  • Individual Health Condition: People in better health tend to experience prolonged benefits from deep tissue massage.
  • Frequency of Sessions: Regular massage sessions can help maintain and extend the effects, promoting long-term health benefits.
  • Lifestyle Choices: A balanced diet, proper hydration, and regular physical activity can significantly prolong the positive effects.
  • Stress Levels: Higher levels of stress can reduce the longevity of massage benefits.
  • Therapist Expertise: The technique and experience of the massage therapist play a crucial role in the effectiveness of the treatment.

What to Do After a Deep Tissue Massage

After receiving a deep tissue massage, it is essential to take specific steps to enhance and prolong the effects of your treatment. These steps help in maximising the therapeutic benefits, reducing any discomfort and ensuring that the body recovers optimally.

Hydrate Properly

The pressure applied during the massage stimulates circulation and helps release toxins from the muscles into the bloodstream. Drinking plenty of water helps the body flush out these toxins more effectively. Adequate hydration also helps replenish fluids lost during the session, aids in maintaining normal muscle function and reduces the risk of muscle stiffness and soreness.

Rest Adequately

While it might be tempting to jump back into your daily routine, taking it easy after a massage is vital. The body needs time to recalibrate and recover from the deep tissue manipulation.

Engage in light activities, such as gentle stretching or leisurely walks, which can help keep the muscles loose without overexerting them. Adequate rest not only prevents strain but also enhances the healing and relaxing effects of the massage.

Heat or Cold Therapy

Applying heat or cold to the body after a massage can be highly beneficial, depending on your body’s response. For inflammation or swelling, cold packs can reduce these symptoms.

In contrast, heat pads are excellent for relaxing muscles further and helping alleviate any lingering tightness or pain. This therapy aids in soothing any discomfort that may arise from the massage and contributes to better muscle recovery.

Follow-Up Treatments

To build on the benefits of your initial session, consider scheduling follow-up treatments. Consistent deep tissue massages can help manage pain, improve flexibility and reduce stress over time. Discuss with your therapist the optimal frequency of sessions to address your specific needs.

The Bottom Line

Deep tissue massage offers a robust approach to addressing chronic pain, enhancing muscle recovery and promoting mental well-being. As we’ve explored, the immediate effects can include a mix of tenderness and relaxation, while the long-term benefits extend to improved flexibility, reduced pain and better mental clarity.

Regular deep tissue massages as part of your wellness routine can help you maintain these benefits and greatly enhance your quality of life. Whether you’re an athlete seeking faster recovery or someone dealing with chronic pain, deep tissue massage is a worthwhile investment in your health.
